View Full Version : Hot Towel is Crucial....

I must admit, I don't always use a hot towel....but when I do it makes a very noticeable difference. My shaves are always closer, smoother.

A good preshave oil can sometimes compensate for little/no hot towel treatment....but the combo of the two is incredible

So, Who uses hot towels, and how often?

TJ....
with ALL due respect.
I dont find my shaves ANY better when using hot towels.
That said...I usually shower b4 I shave.
If, for some reason, I need a shave w/o a shower
HOT TOWELS are essential for a good / great shave.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
BTW, you need an "OTHER"
option for your poll
I woulda chose "Sometimes"

wanted to vote very rarely but it aint there.
I have done two times hot towel treathments after a hot shower.

1- Lather up ->Hot towel goes on top wait 2-3m
2- Re-lather
3-Shave

couldnt really notice a closer /better shave.

I never do, and I shave before I shower, but I lather on my face...

and my skin is definitely not burlap :)

I rarely use the hot towels on the face, since I shower before I shave. I tried shaving before the shower and using hot towels. It did not give me nearly as comfortable shave as showering first. In all honesty, I probably did not take enough time with the hot towels.

I tried shaving before my shower for about a 6 week period and could never get the great results I get with showering first. Gotta' do whatever works for ya!

Washing my face with a good moisturizing soap in the shower seems to be my best pre-shave treatment.

I would strongly advice against doing that.. you need to prep the beard for a closer shave if you can change your routing shave after the shower.

Good to see you PD.

I tried the hot towel thing once, on a day when for some reason I needed to shave without my usual shower beforehand. The results were not as good as my usual routine, which is to wash my face in the shower, apply Proraso pre/post, let that soak in while I finish my shower, shave.

Sometimes I like to shave before a shower so hot water splash and hot towel, mostly I shave after a shower and don't use one. I shave in the AM before work and mostly I just don't have the time, I do wish i could get away with a night shave so I would have more time to have more fun.

I've actually been doing it for about 2 months and it's worked pretty well for me. I'll give a hot towel another chance though and see if it actually helps me.

Good to see you PD.

For clarity's sake....I always shave after a shower....and will then (more often than not, time permitting) proceed with a hot towel, after I have made a semi-lather in the scuttle. The lather then sits and is kept warm with a scuttle. I find the lather actually improves as it sits there marinating itself.

I voted "when time permits." I like using the hot towels, and it does make a difference, but I usually just shave after a shower, so the only time I get to use towels is if I showered the night before.

I always shower before shave. The times I didn't, I just thoroughly washed my face. Only had towel I've ever had was before a shave in the barbers chair.

yeah yeah I know :D

The shower always felt great after shaving too... something about washing my face when it's smooth is nice, and if I ever did actually get nicks they'd close up by the end of the shower anyway.

of course there's always... "If it ain't broke, you haven't messed with it enough"

Hey! That is an idea put a little splash of your favorite beverage in the hot towel for flavor :D

I tried it once, but the only towls I have are either hand towels which are too small, to wrap them around my face I'd need to either lie down or hold them in place by hand, or regular bath towels, far too large. As such I normally only use the shower as the softening agent, well that and splashing hot water on my face every couple minutes while I get everything arranged at the sink.

Exactly, this is my ideal procedure too....running late in the AM means cutting out the hot towel....and even sometimes the shave :sad024:sad023

I love it on the airplanes when they hand out the hot towels after a meal.. I can't imagine being able to spend 3 minutes in the morning with one, every morning.. it sounds like heaven.

How do you guys heat up your towel? Do you toss it in the microwave or is there a hot towel machine for the bathroom just for this?

Wecktwonicwhizzer

The hot towel performs a two-fold function in my morning shave. First it tends to soften my whiskers, especially around the moustache. Second, it elevates the pleasure level of the shave to an even higher plateau. Three minutes with that warm flannel, ah! Love it.

I have forsaken tradition and use the microwave. I boil water and heat my moistened towel at the same time. That way while I am sanitizing my razor, I can also gently steam the visage.:happy069

After my one day of shower before shave I've gone back to shave before shower, although I've started using a preshave oil, which has been very nice, although I can't wait to see what Joe has come up with :)

This is my routine as well. And it's been working quite well, so I don't think I'll experiment with shower only. Unless someone starts handing out fat DE research grants.

A hot towel treatment definately provides a truly luxurious shave. That being said, I don't use one very often. Two reason: Time and I'm lazy about it.

But if you have the time and inclination, I highly recommend the treatment.

For the first thirty years or so of shaving I never even tried a hot towel. I figured that splashing hot water on my face did the same thing as a hot towel.

Gave it a try a couple of months ago, and I was amazed at what a dramatic difference it made.

Much better shaves with a hot towel treatment. However, the time involved and the effort do not make it practical for me to do on a daily basis. So I do it to give myself a treat whenever I have the time.

Oh, and I heat mine up using a microwave.

I'm kind of shocked by the results of this poll. I expected the majority of folks to use the hot towel. Heck, the hot towel has been part of my routine even from all those years of Sensor shaving!

I don't find a big need for it. I usually shave after I get out of the shower so my wiskers are already softened from the hot shower.

I always use a hot towel before I shave. Here is what I do.

1. Hot towel
2. Lather (then rub some on my face and neck) another hot towel
3. Shave WTG
4. Hot towel
5. Shave XTg
6. Cold water
7. Aftershave

I'm surprised so many people use one. Awful time consuming, and frankly, standing around holding a towel to my face isn't that enjoyable. Plus, I have tried it, even using lather under the towel, barbershop style, and it really doesn't make much difference as opposed to just repeated splashing of hot water, as I'm getting everything ready. I usually shave after the shower anyway though, and there is absolutely no point to the hot towels then.

I kind of feel the same way

When you are in the shower could you not just let the hot water run on your face, I would like to think it would be the same effect. I just started doin this and it seems to soften my skin pretty good, usually I shave before a shower but now its been after a shower and working pretty good on my end.

I love the way it feels on my face. Also, I always shave before my shower so the hot towel really does the job to soften the whiskers.
