I just ordered 4 ozs of Rosehip oil from an ebay seller and am in the process of picking out some scents. So now I'm looking for some advice on the rest of the ingredients.

Since at least one of our members here (e.g. TraderJoe) uses predominantly all natural products, I was hoping to get some ideas for a home grown ASB.

I already know I'm going to use only essential oils (Vs. chemical fragrance oils) and will probably steer towards oils that have both a pleasing scent and positive qualities for the skin.

But the rest of the ingredients I'm kind of at a loss. I know I definitely want to keep enough rosehip in the mix for my skin to reap the benefits of this oil, but my skin is on the oily AND sensitive (acne prone) side so the moisturizing qualities for this oil will need to be reduced (at least for a summer version anyway).

And since I consider an ASB to be probably the most important to have 1) good stuff for the skin and 2)NO bad stuff for the skin/overall health (e.g. parabens, etc) I want to try to remain on the all natural/more healthy route.

I mean think about it, most pre shaves and shaving creams don't really stay on the skin for very long (not counting any that's actually absorbed by the skin). That being said, I personally don't think it's that big of a deal if those products aren't all natural.

But a good ASB is supposed to absorb into the skin well and last all day. So it's essentially absorbed into the body and/or isn't removed until the next time you wash your face. That being said I think an all natural/healthy ASB is important.

so.....any ideas for a good ASB recipe?

To be frank, I've played around with rosehip oil, and wasn't impressed. Of course, it may work wonders for you....but I wasn't crazy about it.

The are some concerns with using rosehip oil that should be noted:

1) It is not as stable as other oils, so you might check with vendor as to how long its been laying around - and once you get it - you may want to store in the fridge.

2) Rosehip oil is not generally recommended for people with oily skin and/or who are prone to acne. (and I can quote such from places actually selling it)

That said, I think homemade ASB's are a great alternative to the store-bought stuff.

And as a matter of fact, Will "Doc" and I are in heavy experimentation right now on recipes. I have been using one of our trial-run formulas quite a bit and its been working quite well, I actually apply it to the whole face (including forehead, etc.) after the shave :D I have been using this almost exclusively, save for a few other all-natural moisturizers I have and enjoy....but its far from being done just yet.

The vendor I got it from seems reputable, but I'll check on the date it was bottled, etc. And I'd heard about the oily/acne issues which is why I bought a small bottle to start with. And while my skin is oily in the summer, it does get quite dry in the winter. So I plan on making a lighter summer balm and a heavier winter balm.

:drool The stuff you're working on sounds good, especially since that's the way I usually use my current ASBs (as an "entire face" moisturizer). Let me know when it's been perfected.

Let us know how it works out bud.

I have heard that jojoba oil is good for people with oily skin. I don't have oily skin, and yet it works very well for me.

One tip: after you have applied an oil, you can use a simple tissue or cotton ball to "blot" any excess off. This should help alleviate any problems with getting your skin too greasy.

Oil and Acne?

I would toss a bit of Witch Hazel in it. ;)
