View Full Version : An entry-level Sandalwood scent?

Fellows,

I'm looking to try a sandalwood cream that, first, gives a slick shave, and second, has a moderate-strength scent.

I rarely wear cologne, and the strongest cream I use now is Tabac, and only occasionally. I lean toward musgo, c&e almond and proraso green.

You guys have a recommendation?

Welcome to The Shave Den CutMan!

I'll leave the sandalwood recommendation to others. :D

Cutman, welcom to TSD. If you are looking for a traditional sandalwood scent, T&H makes a great cream.

AOS makes a really good Sandalwood scent that may be more what you are looking for. It is mellowed out a bit, but the scent is heavenly, and quite frankly has spoilied the normal sandalwood smell for me.

Thank you, Highness. Y'all seem like a real sociable bunch.

Bearbeard -- thanks for the recommendation. I think some local stores sell AOS. I'll give it a go.

Taylors would be a good entry cream. It is much cheaper than the other Top End English Shaving creams.

I use Taylor's Sandalwood quite a bit. I do recommend it. Nice scent and affordable. By the way I am running low and I have to get another tub soon.

Apparently I need to start a thread of my own instead of highjacking all these other threads. :D

Here's my take:

1) AOS, while a great product is not "moderate-strength" (although very good rendition of sandalwood, in my opinion)

2) C&E sandalwood is a phony sandalwood scent, and sickeningly sweet

3) TGQ (The Gentleman's Quarter) has a soap and cream that is made using a small amount of real Mysore Sandalwood Oil (in addition to what she considers the finest Sandalwood FO available), and its one of the closest renditions of real sandalwood I have come across.

More importantly, Colleen (TGQ) makes an excellent shaving product (not to mention they aren't loaded with synthetic surfacants, chemicals, or artificial preservatives).

She's the famous vendor without any Web site, correct?

Indeed she is.. But her soaps are Top-Notch.. just send her an email at thegentlemensquarter@verizon.net and ask her what you need to know..

I'm also getting my feet wet with sandalwood. My first foray into it was with, of all creams...Vulfix Sandalwood. In a word, it rocks! The consistency is almost runny and oily, which is a little off-putting, but once you lather it, look out! I would guess that this is a medium to full-bodied strength scent if the AOS is less than moderate in strength. Plus it's reasonably priced to boot!

AOS sandalwood cream has a delicious scent, but a little too strong. At least, to me. YMMV.

I should clarify - what I meant a few posts above was that the Art Of Shaving Sandalwood is more than moderate strength, it would be more appropriately described as being very potent

the sister-in-law bought me the AOS sandalwood cream last year for a Chanukkah gift, and I thought it was wonderful, but the scent was really potent, although, it is gorgeous.

I should also clarify, that although I have used the vulfix sandalwood, I have yet to dip into my AoS sample and based my previous comments on the potency of the AoS sandalwood's scent :o , which was light bodied and crisp to me.

A note. Taylor's is good stuff. And much cheaper than anything else. You should know though, that the scent is (I think) based on Taylor's Sandalwood cologne. At any rate, it does not smell that much like actual Sandalwood.

I like Tayor's too. It's actually a blend of scents with sandalwood being the predominant one. AOS is made with real sandalwood essential oil so it's a good choice!

My favorite sandalwood scent it QED but it's a soap, not a cream. The scent is 100% sandalwood essential oil so it's the real thing.

Looking back on this, I am struck by something. NOONE, not even me, mentioned Trumper's Sandalwood. Like Taylors, it is based on their cologne. But it is, to me, the finest of all the Sandalwood scented creams. In fact, it is one of my all time favorite creams. If I had to pick only one Trumper, that would be it. And if I had to pick only three creams, it would be one (along with T&H Lime and Penhaligons BB or 1870 - Note Tea Tree left out because of the untimely demise of Coates). Simply put, it is fantastic. I prefer the scent to AOS, and every other Sandalwood product I've tried except QED soap. It has this great old leather mustiness to it. The feeling of using it is like reading an old, elegant leather-bound volume in an old, comfortable wood paneled library, with a nice fire going, and sitting in an ancient and well used leather chair.

Can you tell I love this stuff. Although more in fall and winter than now.

I'm new to Sandalwood but I loved the QED soap. I need to compare it to the C&E cream side by side.

I have them both already and yes, they're very different. I'm curious to see in what ways scent wise. C&E scents can be real "different." :D So, two bowls side by side comparison coming up in the near future.

You may find the QED to smell better, you might not....but the deal is that the QED has "real" sandalwood oil in it, whereas the C&E......well who knows whats in there :happy001

Raid?????

C&E Sandalwood is a bit too sweet for my tastes, but Raid? I don't get that.

On the other hand, I have it on good authority that L'Occitane Cade DOES smell like raid. The Outdour Fresh one, specifically.

So of the Sandalwood Soap and Cream vendors. Who uses Essential Oil (EO) Sandalwood in their product?

QEDman Sandalwood Shave Soap is one.

Well, AOS certainly does. Hard to say about most of the others, but if so, it is probably a pretty small amount. (Although I think Mama Bear does have a Sandalwood EO soap).

Colleen @ The Gentleman's Quarter has a small amount of real Mysore Sandalwood Oil in her soap, but in whole, its primarily a FO.

--> She does mention that its the highest quality oil she could find.

The Mama Bear soap is an FO, as far as I know...and is listed as such
