Topics like this seem to come up on every forum in the end, and even though they are universally reviled, I'm really bored at the moment so at the risk of becoming a pariah I thought I'd get the ball rolling here.
So top 5 brushes please, and if you want why.
For me:
1. Simpson's Polo 8 Best. Ergonomic handle, dense knot and works brilliantly with creams and soaps.
2. Kent BK4. I'm becoming more and more impressed with this as of late. I always liked it as a cream brush but I'm finally starting to get great results with soaps. Build quality is up there with the best. Very luxurious feel
3. Plisson HMW10. It's a Plisson, need I say more?
4. Saville Row SR3124. Perfect balance of density in the knot and softness at the tips. Best value brush out there.
5. Simpson's Tulip T2. My go to soap brush. Very good bristle quality with a nice, dense knot.
Regards,
Alex

My choice at this particlar moment in time....and in no particular order.
1. Sabini Faux Horn and Pewter in Silvertip. Just got this one recently. It has a 25mm knot of dense hair and performs superbly with both creams and soaps. It looks fantastic
2. Kent BK4. This was my first high end luxury brush....and absolute luxury it is. I use it when I want a special shave.
3. Shavemac 23mm Pure Badger. This is perfect with soaps. Perfect loading and great for lathering on the face. Was a bit "scritchy" at first....but use has made it a very comfortable brush.
4. SMFIII (Rooney) Brush. Great with creams. Comfortable large handle
5. Rooney Small Style 1 in Super Silvertip. Dense and supersoft. Good with both soaps and creams.

Since I have been concentrating on everything except equipment, I have some basic tools of the trade. A few razors and a number of working stiff brushes. However, this is what I like.
Soap - Omega Boar
Cream - C&E Best Badger Brush
Luxury - TESC 2006 Ebony Finest Silvertip Badger
Outside family keeps gifting me with drugstore brushes. Really nice to clean the deep tooling on the saddles with.
I had a line on a nice Muehle-Pinsel but got burned on an auction. Happy ending though. Keep posting pictures. My Universal Wish List is growing. :)

That's the second time that brush made the top 5 lists here - can anybody tell me how this compares with other brushes, be it similarities/advantages/dis-advantages? How does it work with soaps?
I only use three brushes:

3. Travel - C&E (feels a little scratchy but gets the job done)

It is a big handled brush...I think with a 24mm Knot. Dense ..... and a great bloom. With creams...it performs superbly. Loads of lather for a small cream expenditure. I have only used it once with a soap, and it did perform well.....but not as well as my normal soap brush. Rather surprisingly....the brush appears in the Rooney section of Executive shaving. I thought it was supposed to be a "special"

Thanks, great synopsis.....I'd be interested in more input when you've used it more with soap. However, I see at that link there its about $73USD. Would you think its worth a try? :D
Also, give these specs:
Specifications
Handle 65mm
Hair 55mm
Knot 24mm
Width of Handle 36mm.
Overall Length 4.7"
Looking at pics, I always thought the loft was much longer than 55mm.....more like 65mm. Is this accurate, IYO?

No particular order of ranking, just my observations on the brushes I own:
Shavemaster V200: Great solid brush with a heavy solid wood handle, nice fan shape and very densly packed knot. I only use this brush for Method Shaving so it kind of stands on it's own. Others have had great success using this with regular soaps and creams.
Simpsons Harvard 6 Best: Big luxury type brush. Plenty of density and firmness behind it work later up on both creams and soaps. This one really excels on creams more as soap containers are usually too small to comfortably work this brush in. Will turn the most stubborn of creams in to big mounds of lather every time.
Simpsons Chubby 2 Best: Brush perfection. Nice big knot size does and soft tips. The best/super grading system with Simpsons is always questionable, I couldn't imagine this one being any better. The tips are nice and soft on the face and brush is firm enough to get a nice scrubbing action for those of us who like to lather on the face.
Simpsons Duke 2 Best: Ultimate soap brush. Tight and compact, short loft. Works perfectly inside soap containers and whips up lather very fast. Anyone who uses soaps should own one of these.
Simpsons Persian Jar 1 Super: Small brush, big lather. Very versitile. Good balance, not too stiff, not too floppy. This brush works great on soaps and creams alike. The handle is very small but surprisingly not uncomfortable to hold at all. Holds a gererous amount of lather and hits your face like a soft cushion. Expensive for such a small brush, but no regrets in obtaining this one.
Simpsons Case Pure: Small but effective. Very good for what it's designed for, portable travel brush. The pure grade hair is unlike any other pure I've ever used. Not scratchy at all. Despite the small size, it lathers very well. I usually take soap in a travel container when I'm on the road and this is the brush for the job. The pure grade is also very inexpensive, even for being a Simpsons.

I can't really narrow it down to five.
However, I'd like to mention two in my collection--
1)Shavemac 436 w/pre-Jul 05 silvertip hair (reference the doctors' opinions on this hair)
2) Saint Charles Shave shaving brush (ebony or ivory -- I have both); I like this one better than the vaunted C&E BBB  :D [BTW -- no longer sold by SCS]

So, what do you look for in a brush? What's your preference? I'm not talking about brand, I'm talking about characteristics. For example, I prefer the following:
Knot Size = 21mm-23mm
Base length is low priority but I'll say medium to long.
Base material can add a lot to the cost so, I prefer basic faux ebony or faux ivory.
I like a little skritchiness so I prefer best or super badger over silvertip for everyday use. I prefer silvertip for high end creams and luxury shaves.
It's OK if it's floppy. :D

Pontiac GTO Convertable, Chevy Mailibu SS, Mercury Cougar Eliminator, Ford Mustang and finally an Olds 442. Maybe thats why I have so many things in my shave locker. :D

What are you looking for in a brush, Bill? I'd recommend the Savile Row in a heartbeat, but there are other nice ones. If you like soft & luxurious but not weak, Savile Row is the way to go. And you can pick the knot-size that is right for you. But if you want real scrubbing action, there are others more suitable for the task.

If you're a soap user I highly recommend the Simpsons Duke 2 in Best Badger. It's not the cheapest brush out there but the perfect balance of soft tips, firm and dense knot, and not too big in overall size.

OK, so I take it you're not entirely thrilled with this brush. :D Let's start there. Big - so let's say a 22mm-23mm is more to your taste. I forget what size your brush was. One of the guys can pipe in. Your's is silvertip badger. You might want a finest or best badger or one grade down from silvertip to reduce the floppiness of the brush. A densely packed brush will also cut down on floppiness. Hmmm...A Kent BK4 comes to mind as a decent choice. You'll find a number of guys on here have one in their brush stable.

This would be the "polar opposite" of the BnB finest.
It's not my intention to divert the direction of this thread. I can see I messed up. :signs108
I was just hoping that when everyone lists their top 5, that they turn their choices into a hyperlink if they have the time so I know where I can get one if it strikes my fancy.
I appreciate the suggestions so far, but I still don't know where to get them. I went to the QED site, but could not find a model 3822. The only thing available is the ivory white, as well. I don't want white.
I really tried not to be a slug about my request and did a bit of work by searching google, but could only find sites that charge almost as much for import taxes as they do for the brush. Ain't happenin'. I don't mind subsidizing beauracuracies a little bit, but not by 80% of the original cost.
I like the looks of this brush from Crabtree

I also like the blue one Rich got. Where can I get that one?
I saw this one and thought it was pretty cool...

The awfulness of Charles site is the stuff of legend. Much of what he has to offer is simply not listed. If you click on the other fabulous toiletries link near the bottom of the qed homepage you will find a small selection of the SR silvertips, however many models are not on his site. Also, if you want one in ebony instead of faux ivory then you will definitely have to e-mail Charles, as they are special order items.
The good news is that when you do contact Charles his response time can be measured in nanoseconds, no matter what the time, day or night.
Another choice for brushes would be Lee at leesrazors.com. He should be able to get you a good price on the Simpson's brush of your choice without having to worry about unreasonable import charges. I've never dealt with Lee personally, but a search on any forum will reveal a huge number of satisfied customers.
My personal recommendation would be a Plisson HMW 10 or 12. In North America they are available from Atkinsons of Vancouver, who offer a discount for members of The Other Place (aka Badger and Blade.)

Bill, that EJ on TESC's site is $69 (that's less the EU's VAT, or value added tax). So you pay a little more on shipping, and yeah, the exchange rate stinks, but as opposed to $80 with the VAT, we get a break over here! And TESC is great to deal with. I've ordered from them twice.

I was going to say, "there's something wrong with Steve, he needs help." :D
Based on one of the suggestions above for Shavemac, I put my own brush together and came up with this one...

The truly amazing part is that it got here in a day and a half. From Germany... how'd they do that? I can't even get something from across town in that short span of time.
The bonus is that I really like the quality that is in this brush and it works great. As soon as my soaps eliminate the badger odor mites, it will even be better.
I have to confess... I also bought the Edwin Jagger brush... it's not here yet...:D
